Quick Rise vs Slow Rise {#quick-vs-slow}

Quick Rise (QR) – the foam reaches its target volume in around 30 seconds and is tack-free almost immediately; full cure takes about 5 minutes. This rapid reaction makes QR ideal for vertical and horizontal surfaces such as walls, lofts and ceilings. It is the formulation of choice in residential construction, where speed and the option to apply several thin layers really matter.

Slow Rise (SR) – the foam needs about 60 seconds to take shape and around 8 minutes to cure completely. The longer reaction time lets the mass flow freely inside enclosed cavities, which is why SR is the right choice for injecting walls, suspended ceilings and for industrial and OEM manufacturing. When injecting, control the pressure carefully to avoid deforming the surrounding structure.

Where Froth-Pak is used

  • Residential building insulation: the foam is ideal for insulating roofs, ceilings, lofts, timber-frame walls, floors and thermal bridges. Its tightly closed cell structure is highly effective at eliminating draughts and cold bridges.

Step-by-step instructions

  1. Prepare the cylinders and tools. Before starting, make sure the cylinders have reached a temperature of 25–30 °C. In cooler conditions, use a heating jacket to keep the cylinders at the correct working temperature.
  2. Prepare the work area. Clean and dry the surface. Mask off any components that should not be coated and protect windows and services with masking tape.
  3. Put on personal protective equipment. The operator should wear a hooded coverall, gloves, safety goggles and a half-mask respirator. Both isocyanate and polyol can irritate the skin and respiratory tract.
  4. Connect the cylinders. Connect the red hose to cylinder A (isocyanate) and the blue hose to cylinder B (polyol). Fit the nozzle that matches your application and open the valves.
  5. Test the system. Before spraying for real, fire a test shot into a bag or onto a piece of cardboard to confirm that the components are mixing evenly. If the foam colour is off, replace the nozzle.
  6. Spraying. Hold the gun 30–50 cm from the surface and move it parallel to it. With Quick Rise, keep the gun moving at all times – pauses longer than 30 seconds can cause the nozzle to set. With Slow Rise, inject the foam slowly into the cavity and watch the expansion.
  7. Cure time and finishing. Once the layer is applied, allow a few minutes for it to cure. When fully set, you can trim off any excess foam and cover it with a finish – plasterboard, render or paint. Remember that the foam is not UV resistant and must be covered when used outdoors.

Common questions and issues

Is Froth-Pak foam flammable? Like any organic product, cured foam will burn when in direct contact with a flame, but it does not sustain combustion – once the source of ignition is removed, the foam stops burning. The product is rated Euroclass E.

What are the safety rules? The manufacturer recommends reading the safety data sheet (SDS/MSDS). Wear protective clothing, goggles and a respirator, ensure good ventilation and keep the cylinders at working temperature.

Does the foam stick to every material? Froth-Pak bonds to most substrates: timber, metal, concrete and plaster. It does not, however, adhere to polyethylene (PE) or PTFE (Teflon), so any such films should be removed before spraying.

How do I work out how much foam I need? The manufacturer suggests a simple rule of thumb: surface area (m²) × insulation thickness (l/m²) = litres of foam. For example, a 100 m² roof requiring 8 cm of insulation (R ≈ 3.6) needs around 8,000 l of foam – for a project of this size it is worth considering a 1900 kit topped up with mini kits.

Is the foam waterproof and frost resistant? The foam is more than 95 % closed-cell and waterproof. It remains stable across a temperature range from –150 °C to +100 °C, which makes it suitable for refrigeration and cryogenic applications.

How long can a kit be stored? Single-use cylinders have a shelf life of approximately 15 months from the date of manufacture. After that, the components may begin to lose their properties.

  • Suitable working conditions: store cylinders at 10–25 °C, away from heat sources and UV light. While spraying, ensure adequate ventilation to remove fumes.
  • Personal protection: wear a coverall, goggles, gloves and a half-mask respirator with an A2/P3 filter; avoid contact with skin and eyes. Isocyanate can trigger allergic reactions and asthma, so sensitive individuals should take extra care.
  • Avoid sources of fire and UV light: the foam is flammable when exposed to direct flame, and sunlight will yellow and degrade it. Outdoors, it must be covered with a protective layer (paint, render or cladding).
  • Cleaning and maintenance: the GHA system (gun and hoses) can be cleaned and reused with the dedicated cleaning adapter. If the kit is left unused for an extended period, flush the hoses and discard any aged material to prevent clogging.
