Wafer head screws are specialist fasteners used for mounting stretch ceiling profiles, joining sheet steel and fixing lightweight constructions. The wide, flat head acts as an integrated washer, eliminating the need for a separate washer and distributing clamping force over a larger area. In this article we cover the construction, dimensions, materials and applications of wafer head screws in the context of professional installation.
A wafer head screw consists of three functional elements:

Wafer head screws in the 2K-Trade catalogue are available in the following sizes:
| Size | Thread diameter | Length | Head diameter | Application |
| 4.2 x 13 mm | 4.2 mm | 13 mm | ~12 mm | Joining aluminium profiles to steel angle brackets |
| 4.2 x 16 mm | 4.2 mm | 16 mm | ~12 mm | Standard profile-to-bracket connections |
| 4.2 x 19 mm | 4.2 mm | 19 mm | ~12 mm | Thicker brackets, multi-layer fixing |
| 4.2 x 25 mm | 4.2 mm | 25 mm | ~12 mm | Connections with greater material thickness |
| 4.2 x 32 mm | 4.2 mm | 32 mm | ~12 mm | Steel constructions, sub-frame mounting |

Wafer head screws are made from carbon steel with a corrosion-resistant coating. Standard coatings include:
In the stretch ceiling system wafer head screws serve three primary functions:
When an aluminium profile cannot be fixed directly to the wall (e.g. due to surface irregularities or wall material), steel angle brackets act as an intermediary element. A wafer head screw joins the aluminium profile to the steel bracket. The wide head prevents the screw from punching through the thin profile wall.
On long walls, profiles are butt-joined end to end. Wafer head screws hold the profile connector in place, ensuring continuity and stability of the perimeter frame.
Platforms for spotlights and chandeliers are fixed to adjustable hangers using wafer head screws. The flat head does not protrude above the platform surface, eliminating the risk of membrane damage.
Beyond stretch ceiling installation, wafer head screws are used for:
| Screw type | Head | Advantage | Disadvantage | Application |
| Wafer head | Flat, wide (~12 mm) | Load distribution, no washer needed | Protrudes above surface | Profiles, sheet metal, lightweight structures |
| Flat head (FH) | Countersunk | Sits flush with surface | Requires countersink, smaller clamping area | Timber, furniture, finishes |
| Hex head | Hexagonal | High torque capacity | Requires socket/spanner | Heavy steel construction |
| Wood screw | Countersunk or pan | Thread for soft materials | Not suitable for metal | Timber, OSB, chipboard |
Are wafer head screws suitable for timber? They are not designed for timber. The metal self-tapping thread can split wood. For timber use dedicated wood screws.
How many screws are needed per linear metre of profile? Typically 7-10 per metre (10-15 cm centres). On curves and at corners reduce spacing to 5-8 cm.
Can wafer head screws be used in wet rooms? Yes, provided you use yellow zinc or stainless steel screws. Standard electro-galvanised zinc is adequate for rooms with normal humidity.
What is the maximum combined material thickness? 4.2 mm screws can fasten materials up to 6 mm total thickness (with drill point). For thicker stacks use pre-drilling.
Wafer head screws are a fundamental fastener for stretch ceiling installation and lightweight steel construction. The wide head eliminates the need for washers, distributes load and prevents deformation of thin materials. 2K-Trade offers wafer head screws in five lengths, compatible with aluminium profiles and steel angle brackets from our catalogue.
