What are stretch ceiling profiles

maskownica-profile-sufity

Ceiling profiles are aluminium mounting elements that form the load-bearing structure for stretch ceiling membranes. Every stretch ceiling requires a perimeter profile fixed to the walls or ceiling, in which the membrane is tensioned and locked using a harpoon or wedge system. Without the correct profile, stretch ceiling installation is not possible.

2K-Trade offers stretch ceiling profiles made of 6063-T5 aluminium alloy with 1.0-1.5 mm wall thickness. Standard lengths are 2.5 m or 3.0 m. Profiles fall into three main categories: classic, universal (SU), and specialist.

Classic profiles: CLASSIC and COMFORT

Classic profiles are the most popular category, used in the majority of stretch ceiling installations. They are designed for single-level membrane mounting without additional decorative features.

CLASSIC series

CLASSIC profiles are designed for wall mounting. The membrane is secured using a harpoon system. Key models differ by ceiling drop:

  • CLASSIC 125 — 125 mm drop from the ceiling. Minimum-drop profile for rooms with limited height.
  • CLASSIC 170 — 170 mm drop. Standard choice for most residential rooms.
  • CLASSIC 200 — 200 mm drop. Used when concealing installations or levelling an uneven ceiling.
  • CLASSIC HARD — reinforced version with increased cross-section. For rooms with perimeters exceeding 30 m or non-standard loads.

COMFORT series

COMFORT profiles differ from CLASSIC in the internal geometry of the harpoon channel, which makes membrane insertion and removal easier. Preferred by experienced installers for faster fitting:

  • COMFORT 100 — minimum 100 mm drop. Lowest-profile option in the range.
  • COMFORT 130 — 130 mm drop. COMFORT equivalent of CLASSIC 125.
  • COMFORT 190 — 190 mm drop.
  • COMFORT 200 — 200 mm drop. Latest model in the series.
  • COMFORT HARD — reinforced version.

Universal SU profiles (wall and ceiling mount)

Profiles marked SU (from MODEL SU) combine wall and ceiling mounting options. The same profile can be fixed to either the wall or directly to the ceiling, giving installers greater flexibility in solving site-specific mounting challenges.

Available SU models:

  • CLASSIC-SU 125 — 125 mm drop, wall or ceiling mount.
  • CLASSIC-SU 155 — 155 mm drop.
  • CLASSIC-SU HARD — reinforced version.
  • COMFORT-SU 130 — 130 mm drop in COMFORT system.
  • COMFORT-SU 185 — 185 mm drop.
  • COMFORT-SU HARD — reinforced version.

Specialist profiles: CONTOUR, DELTA, DOUBLE-BOX, STEP

Specialist profiles are designed for specific construction applications that go beyond standard single-level installation.

CONTOUR profiles — level transitions

The CONTOUR series enables multi-level ceilings with defined transitions between planes. Used where the design requires different ceiling heights in one room:

  • CONTOUR — standard transition profile.
  • CONTOUR-CLASSIC — combined with CLASSIC profile.
  • CONTOUR-PRO LUX — with built-in LED lighting recess.
  • CONTOUR-PRO LUX-SU — universal mount version.

DELTA profiles — drill-free mounting

The DELTA and DELTA-SU profiles enable stretch ceiling installation without drilling into walls. They mount to the ceiling via suspension brackets or clips — essential in rooms with lightweight partition walls or plasterboard that cannot withstand point loads.

DELTA BOX is a newer version with an integrated housing that conceals the fixings for a clean visual finish.

DOUBLE-BOX profile — two membranes in one profile

The DOUBLE-BOX profile allows mounting two stretch membranes simultaneously: upper and lower. Used in backlit ceilings where the upper membrane is translucent (light box) and the lower forms the main ceiling surface.

STEP profile — level steps

The STEP profile creates a defined step between two ceiling levels. The level difference is several centimetres, producing a cascade effect. This profile is often combined with LED lighting placed in the step.

LED integration with ceiling profiles

Many ceiling profiles can be combined with GAMMA series LED lighting profiles. This combination allows LED strips to be built into the stretch ceiling structure without additional light fittings. GAMMA LED profiles mount parallel to the perimeter profile and create a light line around the room.

Most common configurations:

  • CLASSIC or COMFORT + GAMMA 20 — standard 20 mm light line.
  • CLASSIC or COMFORT + GAMMA 50 — wide 50 mm light line, intense backlighting effect.
  • CONTOUR-PRO LUX — built-in LED recess, no additional GAMMA profile needed.
  • SIGMA-NEO LED — built-in LED channel in the niche profile.

Profile selection criteria

Choosing the right profile depends on several technical factors:

  • Room height — for ceilings below 250 cm, use minimum-drop profiles (COMFORT 100 or CLASSIC 125). Above 300 cm, any profile can be used.
  • Mount type — wall mounting (CLASSIC, COMFORT) is standard. Ceiling mounting (DELTA, SU) is chosen when walls are too weak or the design requires direct ceiling attachment.
  • Number of levels — single-level ceilings need basic profiles. Multi-level ceilings require CONTOUR or STEP profiles.
  • Lighting — if the project includes built-in LED lighting, choose a profile with an LED recess (CONTOUR-PRO LUX) or plan an additional GAMMA profile.
  • Room perimeter — for perimeters exceeding 30 m, use HARD profiles with increased cross-section.

Technical installation guidelines

Correct ceiling profile installation requires observing several rules:

  • Mounting substrate — profiles must be fixed to a solid base: concrete, brick, or silicate block. Plasterboard requires special anchors or a steel subframe.
  • Anchor spacing — every 10-15 cm on concrete walls, every 8-10 cm on plasterboard.
  • Levelling — profiles must be levelled to within 1-2 mm accuracy across the full room length. Use a cross-line laser.
  • Joining sections — profiles are butted end-to-end with no gaps. The joint must be flush to avoid membrane deformation at the join.
  • Corners — cut profiles at a 45-degree mitre and butt join. Alternatively, score the rear wall and bend the profile.

Frequently asked questions

Which ceiling profile should I choose for a standard room?

For a standard residential room at 250-280 cm ceiling height, the most common choices are CLASSIC 170 or COMFORT 130. Both provide sufficient drop for membrane mounting and routing electrical cables.

What is the difference between CLASSIC and COMFORT profiles?

The difference lies in harpoon channel geometry. COMFORT profiles have a modified channel that makes membrane insertion and removal easier. In practice, this means faster installation and the ability to re-stretch without damaging the profile. Strength parameters of both series are comparable.

Can ceiling profiles be mounted on plasterboard?

Yes, provided you use appropriate anchors (e.g. molly or toggle bolts) and reduce fixing spacing to 8-10 cm. For high membrane tensions, reinforce the plasterboard with a steel subframe or use a DELTA profile mounted directly to the ceiling slab.

How much profile is needed for one room?

Profile quantity equals the room perimeter plus 10-15% allowance for cuts and corners. For a 4 x 5 m room: perimeter = 18 m, with allowance = 20-21 m. At 2.5 m profile length, that is 8-9 pieces.

Are 2K-Trade ceiling profiles compatible with other manufacturers’ membranes?

2K-Trade profiles use the standard harpoon system, compatible with most harpoon membranes available on the European market. Before ordering, verify harpoon dimensions (width and thickness) against the chosen profile’s technical data.
